Hi, fellow golfers:
Apologies for not getting my Mental Tip out to you sooner. My husband (also an avid golfer) and I have been recovering from a flood in our home after a torrential rainstorm when the ceiling caved in right over my desk. Our home and our lives have been in total chaos for weeks, but it's only made us hugely empathetic for all those victims of our latest natural disaster. And also very aware of how itty-bitty our problems have been compared to those suffering right now.
In addition, it's made me personally more aware than ever of how important it is to stay very present -- tuned in to what's happening "right now in this moment" -- to let go of the past because it's gone. All we have is what's in front of us.
Having said that, I want to talk to you today about how you can benefit from an increased ability to experience the seemingly impossible.

FAKE IT SO YOU MAKE IT
What do I mean by "fake it so you make it?" Why should I tell you to fake something? That doesn't sound right, does it?
But you see that's what's so extraordinary about the power of your Subconscious Mind.
|
If you can get your Subconscious Mind to believe a new reality through your imagination -- so that you see, hear, feel and believe that something is true -- your body will follow your mind.
|
For example: Take a moment, close your eyes and picture or imagine that your eyes are sealed shut with Crazy Glue. See, feel and believe that they're sealed so tightly shut that when you try to open them, you can't. The harder you try, the more they'll lock down tighter and tighter. But when you believe that the glue is gone, your eyes immediately open. Of course, if you don't believe and trust that they're sealed shut, you'll instantly open them. But then, you'll never be able to understand the enormous value of this Mental Tip.
For those of you who have worked with me or listened to my CD program, "Own the Zone," you understand that your Conscious Mind and Subconscious Mind function very differently. Your Conscious Mind accepts the so-called reality of your life -- both on and off the golf course. It knows your swing, your handicap, your scoring and your limitations.
|
But your Subconscious Mind only knows the reality of what you tell it and show it to be true. The more you persuade your Subconscious Mind that what you want to be true is already true and the more you repeat the desired suggestions, the more your body will accept this new reality.
|
Think about it: now you can understand the power you have, but maybe haven't used to your advantage. Let's say your present reality is that you're insecure with one of your clubs -- especially when you compete. It could be a wood, one of your wedges or your putter. What's typical is that you're fine on the practice facility but your anxiety gets triggered on the course -- right before you're ready for that shot.
You're hopeful, but the fear has already gotten into your body. You can feel the tension build. You try to relax, but what happens? Rather than that nice smooth practice swing you just executed so beautifully, you rush the shot or decelerate. Your insecurity is rewarded with a bad result.
Solution:
Change your thoughts, attitude AND conversation about your insecurities. From this moment on, you love that club you've botched in the past. Feel connected to it -- see it as a friend. Trust that you can swing it just as smoothly as what used to be your favorite club. Remember that your Subconscious Mind is eavesdropping on all this. These new thoughts and ideas will go in like a knife through butter -- especially when you repeat them over and over again.
|
This new approach might seem at little strange at first -- even uncomfortable. But don't give in to your old, familiar negativity. Let it go. Override it with "the seemingly impossible," and you'll surprise yourself with the results. Stay consistent no matter what the outcome. Don't let those old negative thoughts win by thinking, "Nothing's different. It's just the way it's always been." It takes about three weeks to change a habit, so stay with this. Be patient. Good things will happen!

Just Fake It So You Make It.*
*If you haven't already seen the movie "What the Bleep Do We Know," you can rent it locally. It will help you understand this Mental Tip much better. And please keep me posted on your results. I love to hear about them.
